October. It is filled with pumpkins, hot chocolate, and children dressed up as ducklings, black cats, and iron man. But as we’ve grown into women, October has come to have a new meaning. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To start this off, here are a few facts about Breast Cancer.
- 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer. (If you have a big ol’ Southern wedding that is one of your bridesmaids.)
- Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of death amongst women.
- Over 220,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. More than 40,000 will die.
Even though breast cancer currently has no cure, there are treatment options and early detection is key. We encourage you to review the simple steps to a self-breast exam here. Make it a priority to check yourself each month. Set a reminder in your phone, we just did!
Southerndoe exists to encourage women and girls that Strength is True Beauty. And during this month we’d like to place an extra emphasis on that phrase. Strength. Strength is True Beauty. Show your support this month with some pink, volunteer at a breast cancer event, or provide a donation to a breast cancer charity. Give hope to women everywhere that we will find a cure.
Don’t forget! Take a few minutes this evening and do a self-exam!
